Leaving Kuchanaburi, we headed to Ayutthaya to spend the day before catching the night train to Chiang Mai. We stopped into a grocery store for obligatory Thai coffee (espresso and sweetened condensed milk poured over a few cups of ice, then sipped over the next few hours) and snacks for the train.
In Ayutthaya we also visited a fairy floss and rice paper factory. The fairy floss was basically palm sugar toffee, rolled and stretched in flour until it became stringy.
We also visited some of the temples and ruins in Ayutthaya, to feed our brain as well as our stomachs!
Then it was time to go wait for the night train.
The train was too long to be boarded from the station, so people were gathered all along the tracks to find their carriage. The trains were slightly different to those in Vietnam — the sleeping carriages had open-plan bunks along the length of the carriage, rather than four to a cabin. They were actually a lot more comfortable than the ones in Vietnam, although train ablution is always “interesting”!
