Madrid

Madrid was a very arty stop for us, including a number of museums and galleries, plus awesome food!

A few days in Seville

After waving goodbye to Portugal and crossing the border, the time zone difference meant that what I’d thought was a four hour bus ride was only three – hurrah! Plus when we arrived at the Seville bus station, it was only a 10 minute walk to our accommodation (which was good, because it had started raining.)

Lovely Lisbon

Lisbon airport was well organised and easy to navigate, with very few people waiting in the electronic passport queue at immigration. The only thing that took a while was waiting for the case to come through, and then we were in a Bolt heading for the city.

Transit… on the way to the Iberian Peninsula

On the plane

Hooray for travel! After having time at home in the last school holidays, we were both feeling itchy feet, so decided to plan a trip to Spain and Portugal, where both of us hadn’t been and both wanted to go to. The April holidays looked like a good time since it was spring in Europe and hopefully not as busy or as hot as summer.

Khiva

Khiva

The drive from Bukhara to Khiva was pretty long – 7 hours including a half hour stop for lunch. I was amazed to see the change in the landscape from green fields and greenhouses to shrubs and scrub, to flat low scrub and sand. The lunch stop included a fabulous meal of ‘country meat’, basically thin strips of sliced meat and chips. Yum!

Bukhara

The train ride between Samarkand and Bukhara was pretty similar to the first one we took, except there were fewer snacks on offer. The trip was smooth and uneventful, just the way we like it!

Photo spot at the fortress – what a poser!

Samarkand

The fast train to Samarkand was pretty great. We were initially a bit leery of what economy class on the train would be like, but we had enough bum- and leg- room, there was hot water and instant coffee, and they even gave out free snacks! The only thing tight was the luggage space, but because we boarded early, we got our cases in.
