florence day 3 part 2

Last night we went out for pre-dinner drinks at a little bar around the corner from our hotel. It’s tucked between about three narrow buildings, and our table was right next to one of the doors to the apartment building, so people were coming home and going out through the bar. A bit bizarre. While there we had some bar snacks – tiny pieces of pizza etc, and the greenest olives I’ve ever seen! They are really a grassy green rather than the drab colour our olives tend to be. Yum!

For dinner we decided to branch out a little and forego GF pizza for one of the places listed in my gf guide to italy book, marked as having gf pasta. So we wandered down the street to Vecchio Firenze, passing by a farmacia where I FINALLY found those gf chocolate croissants I’ve been searching for- yay!
The Vecchio Firenze is a fabulously informal restaurant, and very cheap, especially for this part of town. We had a three-course set menu for 14E each!! AND they have gf pasta! I started with the spaghetti carbonara (big portion – I would have been happy just with this!), then moved onto spit roasted meat – chicken, duck and a sausage, by which point my tummy was quite stretched, and then a small piece of icecream cake for dessert.
Delicious, simple, cheap food. We thought we would explode on the walk home! Next time, just the pasta!

While we walked back to the hotel we passed by some street theatrics – a guy in a charlie chaplin outfit with a whistle, making tourists do weird things. He had two Aussie chicks and a Brazilian guy up, and had them wearing hats, holding large balloons and waddling from one end of the street to the other. He was a geat showman!
