Venice – day 3

After finding internet last night we wandered through Cannaregio, which was a lot less frantic with tourists. I stopped at a mask shop to pick up a pressie for Mum and one for me (a swarovski encrusted metal filigree mask – niiiiice). Then we headed back to the hotel and had dinner at the restaurant next door. I had monkfish stew and rice. Not quite up to the standard of what the boys had (pizzaaaaaa) but very nice.

This morning I decided to get up early and walk back to the supermarket we’d seen in Cannaregio to see if they had any GF stuff. I got a bit directionally-challenged and found the north side of the island, rather than the supermarket, but hey, it’s good to have a morning constitutional before breakfast! (just not normally 2 hours…) I eventually found it, and bought gluten free jam tarts! And blood orange juice and water, and grapes. I got in trouble as I hadn’t got a weight sticker for the grapes, and was sent in disgrace back to the fruit section where I still had no idea what to do. Then I saw someone else weigh their fruit, then push a button, so I copied them. Voila! sticker. Then I had to run back to the checkout and apologise profusely to the nonnas brhind me. I could feel them thinking “bloody tourists!”

Then I powerwalked back to the hotel, just in time to wolf down a jam tart and pack my bags before checking out. We power-walked to the station and then had an “argh” moment trying to find the train. We were in car 12, about a kilometre down the platform. The minute we got on, the train started moving. Phew!

Goodbye Venice… I thought it was gorgeous, but a bit too touristy. Maybe it was because we were there on the weekend – it looked a lot quieter on Monday.
